CINSA 2017 / Reconciliation through Research: Fostering miýo-pimātisiwin

14-16 June 2017: The Canadian Indigenous/Native Studies Association (CINSA) Conference 2017 will be hosted by the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities "Alfonso Vélez Pliego" (ICSyH) at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP).

Hosting CINSA speaks of the relevance of studying and honouring Indigenous People far and beyond the political borders that have been created across the Americas and the need to strength our ties across both the academia and our communities.

This is the first time CINSA is hosted in a country outside of Canada and the relevance of connecting the North with the South at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla represents an excellent opportunity for building the bridges that transcend the state created borders/borderlands.

The conference's theme centres on Indigenous presence and thought beyond borders where mobility is acknowledged and sedentarism is rejected in a contentious world. The rejection of western models defining and constraining Indigenous People across borders/borderlands is the premise that we hope will spark further development and criticism.

The conference organizers seek original works examining the themes of Indigenous thought and agency across borders, borderlands and frontiers in Mexico, Canada, the United States as well as Globally. These political borders are not only physical but also immaterial and psychological creations. The (de)construction of borders/borderlands can be acts of resistance or simply following centuries-old rhythms. We entertain the idea of using the notion of 'metaphysical' borders across time and space…
